The french impact study of international mobility of apprentices

Publiée le Freitag 18 Januar 2013
In May 2012  the French National Agency launched a study to measure the impact of international mobility on level IV and V apprentices.
It includes the Regional Councils of Aquitaine, Auvergne, Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy), Bretagne (Brittany), Centre, Champagne-Ardenne, Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy), Île-de-France, Limousin, Lorraine, Poitou-Charentes and Rhône-Alpes; APCMA, CCI (Chambers of Commerce and Industry France) and AOCDTF, the Association ouvrière des compagnons du Devoir du Tour de France.
These  partners have enabled Céreq to compile a database of more than 800 apprenticeship training centers, that sent apprentices on placements abroad during the academic year 2012-2013.
Starting from October 2012, the apprentices concerned have been invited to fill in an initial self-administered questionnaire on the net before leaving abroad. Besides the personal information required to include the apprentice in the survey protocol, this questionnaire contains questions on the organisation and preparation of the placement and the reason why the apprentice chose to take part in the scheme. So far, more than 300 responses have been received. Of these, apprentices whose placement abroad took place in 2012 will shortly be invited to fill in a second questionnaire on their placement and their experiences abroad.
The firsts collected results show that interviewees are mostly studying for the vocational baccalauréat, some are preparing the CAP or “brevet professionnel”.
Almost as many young women as young men answered to the survey.
The duration of the abroad placement  is in general between 4 and 5 weeks; the most part of them was organised on grouped departure, handled by their training center.
In 2013, Céreq will start to question a control sample (drawn from an administrative source) in order eventually to obtain an objective measurement of the impact of international mobility on apprentices’ development.
